What a dozen balls does for a program

  • Bowlers get instant feedback. If the wrist isn't behind the ball, it won't swing — so a junior feels a good release straight away, without a coach standing over them.
  • Batters face a swinging ball for hours, not a couple of overs at the start of a session. Harder work, and that's the point.
  • Fielding volume comes free. Most junior programs under-do throwing. With twelve balls going down, the players retrieving and throwing them back are getting real volume in without running a separate drill.
  • It won't damage your bats. There is enough give in the ball that it isn't going to damage a squad's gear the way a hard training ball will.
  • Throwdowns become a contest. The coach is genuinely trying to get the batter out, and the players know it.

Which weight for a squad?

146 g — for the most swing. The all-rounder, and the easier of the two to get moving. Underarms, overarms, throwdowns, all flingers and bowling machines. This is the one most clubs order.

156 g — for the most realistic feel. Senior men's weight. It swings a little less than the 146 g, but comes off the bat closest to a real leather ball, and it is the one higher-level players tend to prefer. Built for the quickest throwers: the RoboArm, the RapidArm and the clear Sidearm.

A lot of clubs order a dozen of each — the 146 g to challenge players in the air, the 156 g when they want match-realistic contact.

Junior programs

For the younger age groups, the SWINGA Backyard is a soft, lightweight 60 g version — same swing, safe for juniors and confined spaces. Available in singles, 6 packs and 12 packs.
